5-Day Devotional: Turning North

Day 1: You’ve Circled Long Enough

Reading: Deuteronomy 2:1-3

Devotional: Israel wandered for 38 years around the same mountain, not because God was slow, but because they wouldn’t trust Him. God’s words echo through time: “You have circled this mountain long enough. Now turn north.” What mountain have you been circling? Perhaps it’s fear, unforgiveness, or a comfort zone you’ve made into a prison. God doesn’t point out where we’re stuck to shame us—He calls us to move forward. Provision doesn’t give permission to stay. Today, God is saying “enough” not in rejection, but as an invitation to something better. He sees your potential and wants you to stop wandering and start walking toward His promises.

Reflection: What “mountain” keeps you going in circles? Write it down and ask God for courage to turn north.

Day 2: The Problem of Comfortable Captivity

Reading: Deuteronomy 1:6-8; Exodus 16:1-3

Devotional: Israel camped at Mount Sinai for a year. Life became familiar. Routine settled in. Freedom felt “good enough.” But God said, “You have stayed at this mountain long enough.” Stuck doesn’t mean nothing is happening—it means nothing is changing. You can be busy without becoming, active without advancing. Comfort becomes more dangerous than crisis when it keeps us from God’s calling. The Israelites had provision—manna, water, protection—but provision isn’t permission to remain. God was faithful to sustain them, but He wanted to lead them forward. Where has comfort replaced calling in your life? Growth always demands discomfort. This year, choose progress over comfort.

Reflection: Identify one area where you’ve chosen comfort over God’s calling. What small step can you take today?

Day 3: Seek First the Kingdom

Reading: Matthew 6:25-34

Devotional: “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” This is the answer to our wandering—putting God first. True north isn’t magnetic north. Magnetic north shifts, influenced by the earth’s pull—590 miles off from true north. Similarly, the world’s magnetic pull can shift us from our destination. Jesus is our true north, “the same yesterday, today, and forever.” When we seek answers, we may not find them, but when we seek God, the answers find us. A life-giving, God-first relationship with Jesus is the destination. Everything else—provision, direction, purpose—flows from this priority. Don’t pursue the blessings; pursue the Blesser.

Reflection: How can you practically “seek first” God’s kingdom today? Start your morning with Him before anything else.

Day 4: Daily Steps Create Lasting Change

Reading: James 4:8; Psalm 119:105

Devotional: Real change doesn’t start with big promises—it starts with small, daily actions. One decision repeated becomes transformation. Israel’s problem wasn’t a single failure but a lifestyle of complaining and unbelief. Conversely, turning north requires daily redirecting your heart. Consider practical steps: daily Bible reading, morning prayer, the Lectio 365 app for bedtime and morning devotions. These aren’t legalistic requirements but relationship builders. Just as physical therapy hurts but heals, spiritual disciplines may feel uncomfortable but produce strength. What’s the best time to change? Ten years ago. The second best? Right now. The worst? Tomorrow. God is waiting for your next step, not your perfect plan. Small obedience leads to great transformation.

Reflection: Choose one daily habit to implement this week that draws you closer to God. Write it down and commit to it.

Day 5: Don’t Move Without His Presence

Reading: Exodus 33:12-16; Ezekiel 36:26-27

Devotional: Moses declared, “If Your presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here.” God’s presence was more vital than even entering the Promised Land. As we step into 2026, this must be our prayer: “God, unless Your presence goes with me, I don’t want to go.” Faith means moving without all the details, but never without His presence. God promises, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you… I will put My Spirit in you.” You don’t need all the answers—you need His presence. You don’t need the whole map—you need the Guide. This year, don’t just pursue goals; pursue God. Make your declaration: “This year I’m not circling, I’m climbing. I’m not stuck, I’m moving. I’m turning north.”

Reflection: Pray Exodus 33:15 over your year. Commit to not moving forward without seeking God’s presence daily.

Closing Challenge: Take these notes, get alone with God, and write down what mountain you’ve been circling. List specific steps to turn north. Take a picture and review it on the first of every month in 2026. Let this be your year of moving forward with God.
