Small Group Guide: Jesus Over Religion
Based on John 2:13-22
Opening Prayer
Begin your time together by thanking God for His presence and asking the Holy Spirit to guide your discussion and reveal truth from His Word.
Ice Breaker
Share a time when you thought you had something figured out (parenting, a skill, a concept), only to realize later you didn’t understand it as well as you thought.
Sermon Recap
Pastor Michael taught from John 2:13-22, where Jesus cleanses the temple during Passover. The main theme: Jesus came to demolish religion and offer relationship. Jesus demonstrated “protective passion” for those trying to get close to God, clearing out the religious systems and people that made it difficult for outsiders to connect with Him.
Key Takeaways
-
Understanding the Passover – The Passover represented three things:
- Deliverance from slavery
- Protection from judgment
- The beginning of a new life
-
Jesus is the Lamb of God – Jesus became the ultimate Passover lamb, fulfilling what the Old Testament sacrificial system pointed toward.
-
Protective Passion – Jesus wasn’t angry AT the outsiders; He was angry FOR the outsiders who were being kept from God.
-
Religion vs. Relationship – Religion says “do the right things, then God will love you.” Jesus says “I’ll do it for you; just step into relationship with me.”
Discussion Questions
Understanding the Text
-
What stood out to you most from this passage or the sermon? Why?
-
Why do you think Jesus responded with such intensity in the temple? What does this reveal about His character?
-
How does understanding the Passover story from Exodus 12 help us better understand what Jesus was doing in the temple?
Personal Reflection
-
Pastor Michael said, “Jesus will always be upset when someone is trying to get close to Him and people or systems are making it hard.” Have you ever felt like it was hard to get close to God? What made it feel that way?
-
Which makes it harder for you to approach God:
- Things you’ve done (guilt, shame, past mistakes)
- Things done to you (hurt, betrayal, unanswered questions)
How does knowing Jesus is the Lamb of God change your perspective on this?
-
Where do you find yourself leaning more toward religion (striving, performing, earning) rather than relationship with Jesus? What would it look like to shift that?
Going Deeper
-
Pastor Michael mentioned that “what you believe determines how you behave.” How does believing that Jesus is the perfect Lamb who paid your debt change how you live day-to-day?
-
The passage mentions “zeal for your house will consume me” (verse 17). What do you think Jesus is zealous/passionate about today? What does that mean for us as His followers?
-
In verse 22, the disciples “remembered” and “believed” after Jesus was raised from the dead. Sometimes understanding comes later. What’s something about God or faith that makes more sense to you now than it did in the past?
Practical Application
This Week’s Challenge
Replace Religion with Relationship – Choose one of these action steps:
Option 1: Stop Striving
- If you tend to beat yourself up or feel like you don’t measure up, spend time this week meditating on Scriptures about God’s grace and acceptance (Romans 8:1, Ephesians 2:8-9, 1 John 3:1).
- Write down the religious thoughts you have (“I should be better,” “God must be disappointed”) and replace them with relationship truths (“I am loved,” “Jesus paid it all”).
Option 2: Step Into Relationship
- If you’ve been around church but never truly accepted Jesus, take that step this week. Talk to your small group leader or a trusted Christian friend.
- Start having daily conversations with God, not as rituals but as relationship.
Option 3: Help Others Get Close to God
- Jesus was passionate about removing barriers between people and God. Is there someone in your life who feels like an outsider? How can you help them feel welcomed and loved this week?
- Evaluate: Do your words or actions ever make it harder for someone to get close to Jesus? Ask God to show you and make changes.
Group Activity
Go around the circle and have each person complete this sentence: “One way I want to experience more relationship and less religion this week is…”
Pray for each person’s specific area.
Memory Verse
John 1:29 – “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”

- Ask God to help you replace striving with resting in His finished work
- Pray for those who feel like outsiders or far from God
- Pray for anyone in your group who made a decision to follow Jesus
- Ask for protective passion like Jesus had – to help others get close to God
