5-Day Bible Reading Plan: Following Jesus with Ordinary Faith
Day 1: Jesus Reveals Himself to Ordinary People
Reading: John 1:35-42
Devotional: Andrew was just an ordinary fisherman when Jesus revealed himself. He wasn’t wealthy, educated, or influential—yet Jesus chose him. This is the stunning reality of grace: God doesn’t wait for you to become impressive before He calls you. Your past mistakes, your lack of credentials, your perceived ordinariness—none of these disqualify you from God’s mission. Jesus looked past what Andrew brought to the table because Jesus IS the table. He doesn’t need what you have, but He will use what you offer. Today, recognize that God has specifically chosen you, knowing your history, your failures, and your potential. Your availability matters more than your ability.
Reflection Question: What excuses have you been making about why God can’t use you?
Day 2: The Power of Curiosity
Reading: Psalm 34:1-8
Devotional: “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” Curiosity is an underrated spiritual quality. Before repentance, before faith, before conviction comes curiosity—that small crack in the door of your heart that opens you to the possibility that Jesus is who He says He is. Andrew and John didn’t have all the answers when they started following Jesus; they simply asked, “Where are you staying?” and Jesus welcomed them in. If you’re exploring faith, skeptical, or seeking, know that Jesus invites honest discovery. You don’t need perfect faith to approach Him—just enough curiosity to take one step closer. That small taste of His goodness will transform your hunger into satisfaction.
Reflection Question: What questions about Jesus are you afraid to ask?
Day 3: Speaking Identity Before Performance
Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:17; Ephesians 2:10
Devotional: Jesus looked at impulsive, inconsistent Simon and called him “Peter”—the rock—before he demonstrated any rock-solid qualities. This is how Jesus works: He speaks identity before maturity, calling before consistency, purpose before proof. He doesn’t define you by your weaknesses but by the future He has for you. Right now, in Christ, you are called righteous, holy, faithful—not because of your performance but because of His performance on the cross. You may not be who you want to be yet, but you are becoming who Christ has called you to be. Stop waiting to earn your identity. Receive it as a gift and let it shape your transformation.
Reflection Question: What has Jesus called you that you don’t yet see in yourself?
Day 4: The Simple Call to Follow
Reading: Matthew 4:18-22; Luke 9:23-25
Devotional: Jesus gave Philip a clear call, not a complicated one: “Follow me.” We often stumble over simplicity, looking for complex formulas to find our purpose. But the answer is straightforward—open God’s Word, discover how Jesus lived, and live like that. Love your enemies. Turn the other cheek. Forgive seventy times seven. Following Jesus doesn’t require a theology degree; it requires daily surrender. The call is simple, but execution is hard because our flesh resists. Yet this is where transformation happens—in the daily decision to follow Jesus one step at a time, trusting that His way leads to life abundant.
Reflection Question: In what specific area is Jesus asking you to follow Him today?
Day 5: Inviting Others to Encounter Jesus
Reading: John 1:43-51; 1 John 1:1-4
Devotional: Andrew’s first response after meeting Jesus was to find his brother Simon and say, “We have found the Messiah.” Philip told skeptical Nathanael, “Come and see.” When you’ve encountered Jesus, you cannot keep it to yourself. Authentic faith naturally overflows into invitation. The gospel has reached you 2,000 years later because ordinary people committed to sharing what they experienced. You don’t need perfect theology or a dramatic testimony—just a willingness to say, “Come and see what Jesus has done for me.” Who is the “one” God has placed in your life? Pray for them. Invite them. Let your transformed life point them to the One who changes everything.
Reflection Question: Who needs you to invite them to encounter Jesus this week?
Closing Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for revealing Yourself to ordinary people like me. Help me move from curiosity to commitment, from hearing Your call to following Your steps. Speak identity over my life and give me courage to invite others into the transforming relationship I have with You. In Your name, Amen.
