Cove Group Guide: “Life-Changing Generosity: A Journey Beyond Fear to Faith”

Based on 2 Corinthians 8:1-12

Opening Prayer & Icebreaker (10 minutes)

Icebreaker Question: What’s the most meaningful gift you’ve ever received, and why was it so special to you?

Sermon Overview (5 minutes)

This week, Pastor Jeremy walked us through 2 Corinthians 8, exploring what life-changing generosity looks like. The sermon focused on five truths about biblical generosity during our Beyond commitment season, with the goal of 100% engagement and $15.5 million over two years for ministry, missions, and our new worship center.

Three Key Words: Surrender, Pray, Obey

  • Discussion Questions
  • Section 1: Grace as the Foundation (15 minutes)
  • Read 2 Corinthians 8:1-2

Pastor Jeremy said, “Grace leads to generosity.” How have you personally experienced God’s grace in your life recently?

Why do you think understanding God’s grace is the foundation for biblical giving rather than just a need or a building project?

Share a time when you felt “helpless” and someone helped you. How did that experience affect your gratitude?

Section 2: Generosity in Hard Circumstances (15 minutes)

Read 2 Corinthians 8:3-4

The Macedonian believers were “begging for the privilege” to give, even though they were poor. What does this reveal about their perspective on giving?

Pastor Jeremy said, “Generosity has nothing to do with how much stuff you have or how much money you make.” Do you agree or disagree? Why?

What circumstances in your life might you be using as an excuse not to be generous? How can you shift from a scarcity mindset to an abundance mindset?

Section 3: Surrendered Hearts (15 minutes)

Read 2 Corinthians 8:5

The Macedonians “gave themselves first to the Lord.” What does it practically look like to give yourself to God before giving your money?

Pastor Jeremy illustrated with his daughter Leah having both hands open to receive and give. How does keeping our hands “open” to God change our relationship with money and possessions?

Discuss the concept of “firstfruits” giving. What would it look like for you to give God your “first and best” rather than leftovers?

Section 4: Growth Through Commitment (10 minutes)

Read 2 Corinthians 8:6-7

Pastor Jeremy shared how making a commitment to his brother about health helped him lose weight. How have commitments helped you grow in other areas of life?

He said, “Everything you will celebrate later will require faith now.” What is something you’re afraid to commit to that might require faith right now?

How does making a financial commitment to God help us mature spiritually?

Section 5: Reflecting the Gospel (10 minutes)

Read 2 Corinthians 8:9

Jesus “though he was rich, yet for your sake became poor.” How does our generosity reflect the gospel to a watching world?

What impact did Donna’s story have on you? How does generosity create opportunities for gospel conversations and transformation?

Key Takeaways

  • Five Truths About Life-Changing Generosity:
  • Life-changing generosity is in response to God’s grace
  • Life-changing generosity can be demonstrated in hard circumstances
  • Life-changing generosity flows from a surrendered heart to the Lord
  • Life-changing generosity grows and matures us
  • Life-changing generosity reflects the gospel
  • Paul’s Three Encouragements (2 Corinthians 8:10-12):
  • Finish what you started
  • Give according to what you have been given
  • Give from the heart (cheerfully)
  • Practical Application (15 minutes)
  • Personal Reflection Questions:

Am I living by faith or by fear when it comes to generosity?

Have I given myself first to the Lord before considering what to give financially?

Am I giving God my firstfruits or my leftovers?

This Week’s Challenge:

Choose one of the following to implement this week:

Option 1: Surrender Set aside 30 minutes this week to pray specifically about your relationship with money and possessions. Ask God to reveal any areas where you’re holding back from full surrender.

Option 2: Pray Create a list of financial fears or concerns. Pray through each one, asking God to replace fear with faith. Journal what God speaks to your heart.

Option 3: Obey If you haven’t already, prayerfully fill out your Beyond commitment card. If you have, pray about whether God is calling you to increase your commitment.

Bonus Challenge: Have a conversation with your spouse, family member, or accountability partner about what “faith-filled giving” looks like for you versus “fearful giving.”

Closing Discussion (5 minutes)

What is one specific way this discussion has challenged or encouraged you?

How can we pray for each other regarding generosity and the Beyond commitment?
