Cove Group Guide: “When Miracles Aren’t Enough: What Jesus Really Wants From Us”

Based on John 4:43-54

Opening Prayer & Icebreaker (10 minutes)

Icebreaker Question: Have you ever hiked or traveled a long distance for something really important? What motivated you to make that journey?

Sermon Recap (5 minutes)

This week we examined the contrast between the Galileans who wanted Jesus for His miracles and the royal official who approached Jesus with genuine faith and humility. Jesus calls us beyond superficial admiration to genuine belief that transforms our lives.

Key Passage: John 4:43-54

  • Discussion Questions
  • Part 1: The Galileans’ Error (15 minutes)

What was the fundamental problem with how the Galileans approached Jesus? (They wanted His miracles but not His message; they wanted His blessings but not Him)

Pastor Chad said, “They like his miracles. They don’t really like his message.” How do you see this same attitude in modern Christianity or even in your own life?

Read Matthew 11:20-24. Why was Jesus so harsh with the cities of Galilee? What does this tell us about the danger of witnessing God’s power without responding in repentance?

In what ways are we tempted to treat Jesus like a “genie in a bottle” rather than as Lord? Share specific examples if comfortable.

Part 2: The Father’s Good Example (15 minutes)

What do you notice about how the royal official approached Jesus? (Humility, desperation, calling Him “Sir,” believing His word, acting on that belief)

The official believed Jesus’ word without seeing the miracle firsthand. What does this teach us about faith?

Pastor Chad said there’s a difference between “asking questions because I want truth” versus “asking questions because I’m trying to wall my heart off from the Lord.” How can we tell the difference in our own hearts?

The official had wealth, position, and access to the best medical care, yet none of it could save his son. When have you reached the end of your own resources and had to depend completely on Jesus?

Part 3: What Christians Really Believe (15 minutes)

  • Review the three core beliefs mentioned:
  • Jesus is God
  • He came to forgive our sins
  • He came to transform our souls

Which of these three truths do you find easiest to believe? Which is hardest? Why?

Pastor Chad quoted Tim Keller: “Jesus lived the life I should have lived and he died the death I should have died.” How does understanding this change the way you approach Jesus?

Part 4: Do I Really Believe? (20 minutes)

  • The Three Litmus Tests:
  • Increasing love for Jesus

Can you look back over your Christian journey and see growth in your love for Christ, even with ups and downs?

What competes with Jesus for your affection? (hobbies, sports, career, comfort, etc.)

Read Matthew 22:37-38. What would it look like practically to love God with “all your heart, soul, and mind“?

Increasing love for your neighbor

Read 1 John 2:9-10. Why is love for other believers such a critical test of genuine faith?

Who in the church or in your life is difficult to love right now? How can you grow in loving them?

How can this group help you practice bearing with one another?

Increasing practice of obedience

Read 1 John 2:3-4. This is a strong statement. How do we balance grace (we’re not perfect) with the expectation of growing obedience?

What sin has the Holy Spirit been making you increasingly uncomfortable with?

What’s one area where you’ve seen God help you grow in obedience over the past year?

Personal Reflection (10 minutes)

Take 3-5 minutes of silence for personal reflection. Consider these questions:

Am I approaching Jesus primarily for what He can give me, or do I genuinely love Him?

Where is the Spirit calling me to repent and get back on track?

Which of the three litmus tests reveals an area where I need to grow?

Optional: Have group members share one insight from their reflection time.

Practical Application

  • This Week’s Challenge:
  • Choose ONE of the following to practice this week:
  • Deepen Your Love for Jesus
  • Spend 15 minutes each day in prayer, focusing on who Jesus is rather than what you need from Him
  • Journal about one attribute of Jesus each day (His holiness, mercy, wisdom, power, etc.)
  • Love Your Neighbor
  • Reach out to someone in the church you don’t know well and invite them for coffee
  • Pray daily for someone who bothers you or is difficult to love
  • Serve someone in practical need this week
  • Practice Obedience
  • Identify one area where the Spirit has been convicting you and take concrete action
  • Confess a persistent sin to a trusted friend and ask for accountability
  • Replace one habit that’s pulling you away from God with a life-giving practice

Share your choice with at least one other person in the group for accountability.

Closing Prayer (10 minutes)

  • Pray for each person who stood during the service in response to God’s conviction
  • Pray for courage to approach Jesus with humility and genuine faith
  • Pray for growing love for Jesus, for one another, and for obedience
  • Pray for Easter services and for those who will be baptized
  • Preparation for Next Week
  • Read John 5:1-18

Consider: What areas of your life feel “paralyzed” or stuck? Where do you need Jesus to speak healing?

Leader Notes

Be vulnerable: As the leader, model honest self-reflection about your own struggles with superficial faith

Create safety: Remind the group that this is a confidential space for honest wrestling with faith

Avoid legalism: Balance the call to obedience with the reality of God’s grace and patience with us

Follow the Spirit: If the group needs more time on a particular question, allow the conversation to go there

End on hope: Make sure to conclude emphasizing God’s love, grace, and power to transform us
