In this message, Pastor Chad walked us through Jesus’ bold declaration: “I am the light of the world.” Jesus made this statement during the Feast of Tabernacles, surrounded by hundreds of candles that symbolized God leading Israel through the desert. Jesus claimed to be the fulfillment of that light—the only true light that doesn’t lead to darkness but to life itself.

What does Pastor Chad mean when he says Jesus brings “the light of life“? What’s the difference between biological life (bios) and spiritual life (zoe)?

Personal Reflection

David Foster Wallace said, “Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship.” What are some common things people worship in our culture today? Be specific.

Wallace also warned that counterfeit worship will “eat you alive.” Have you ever experienced this personally—where something you pursued promised fulfillment but led to emptiness? Share if you’re comfortable.

The sermon mentioned several counterfeit lights: career success, family, money, appearance, power, intellect. Which of these (or others) do you find yourself most tempted to elevate above Christ?

Going Deeper

Jesus provided evidence for His claims: His miraculous birth, sinless life, power over demons, miracles, teachings with authority, and resurrection. Which piece of evidence do you find most compelling? Why?

In verse 28, Jesus says, “I always do the things that are pleasing to [the Father].” How does Christ’s perfect obedience being credited to us change the way we approach God? How is this different from trying to earn God’s approval?

The Pharisees saw Jesus’ miracles and heard His teaching but still rejected Him. Why do you think evidence alone isn’t enough to produce faith? (Hint: Romans 10:17)

Application

How can you tell if something has become a “counterfeit light” in your life? What are the warning signs?

The sermon ended with the hope that “many believed in him” (v. 30). Is there anyone in your life who needs to hear about the true light? How can you share this hope with them this week?

Jesus said His followers “will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” What does it practically look like to “follow” Jesus as the light in your daily life?

Share the Light – Have a conversation with one person about who Jesus is and what He’s done for you. Share your story of how Christ brought light into your darkness.

Memorize Scripture – Commit John 8:12 to memory: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Prayer Prompts

Break into smaller groups of 2-3 and pray for each other:

Confession – Ask God to forgive you for pursuing counterfeit lights and to help you see where you’ve elevated good things above Him

Illumination – Pray that Christ would shine His light into the dark places of your life and bring spiritual life where there’s been spiritual death

Boldness – Ask for courage to share the light of Christ with those still walking in darkness

Gratitude – Thank Jesus for His perfect obedience that is credited to you, and for paying the debt of your sin on the cross

Closing Thought

“The hope of the gospel isn’t that you and I have to be good enough to please God… The hope of the gospel is that Christ was perfect for us, that Christ perfectly obeyed the Father. And for those that come to Jesus, that perfect obedience is credited to them.”

You don’t come to Jesus with righteousness to offer—you come empty-handed, and He clothes you in His perfection.
